Hydrocal, durham's water putty

2020

I make these forms by gathering plaster in my hands just as it begins to thicken then passing the rapidly setting hydrocal from hand to hand until it kicks and the forms solidify completely. They are then sanded and polished until totally soft and smooth. The resulting object is a record of the negative space between my palms. I think of them as a gesture towards intimacy or connection across distance. A way for someone far from me to feel the shape of my hands.

When viewed from a distance the forms settle even more deeply into a space of longing and desire.
