Blue is for when our reach exceeds our grasp

2 channel video; 3min loop. 2016

I made this pair of videos thinking of the sponge dipped in blue dye as a hand-held body of water with thumb-lined horizons. I wanted to record my surrogate sea in front of the actual ocean but I live far from the coast in central Texas, so I sent the sponge and my video as a template to a loved-one living on the east coast and asked them to act as my as my hands by mirroring my gesture as best they could. Gently squeezed to expose it's insides, the sponge makes clear its attempts and failures when viewed beside its aspiration.

Of course the ocean isn’t actually blue.
